Overall U.S. soda consumption contracted 0.9 percent, the 10th straight yearly decline, as health-conscious consumers drop traditional carbonated drinks for everything from water, to energy drinks, to tea.Coca-Cola’s full calorie Coke remained the country’s top selling soda last year with a market share of 17.6 percent after its volume rose 0.2 percent, according to Beverage Digest, a trade publication and data service.
Overall volumes of all nonalcoholic beverages including bottled water rose 1.7 percent in the U.S. last year after dropping 1.6 percent in 2013, according to Beverage Digest.
Beverage Marketing Corp., another industry tracker, estimated that U.S. volumes of nonalcoholic drinks rose 2.2 percent last year- the fastest rate of growth since 2006- including a 7.3 percent surge of bottled water volumes. Beverage Marketing has predicted that U.S. Bottled water volumes could surpass soda by late 2016 or early 2017.
